Summary

The Academy for Science and Design (ASD) was approved by the New Hampshire State Board of Education in March of 2006, and opened in September of 2007.  ASD is an innovative public Charter School that is part of the effort to transform the educational terrain in New Hampshire. Our school works to provide authentic learning experiences for students in grades six through twelve, fostering their curiosity and aptitude for leadership in college and beyond.  The lens through which we are developing and preparing future leaders is within the framework of a STEM education.  We define STEM as the preparation of students for competency in the following disciplines:  Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  ASD’s total enrollment has grown to 525 students.

Curriculum

ASD focuses on STEM curriculum at an accelerated pace,  offering advanced science and math courses as well as electives in the areas of aeronautics, anatomy, anthropology,  computer sciences, design technology, and environmental science.  As the school has grown, ASD has been increasing AP course offerings. Please note: our classes with the “Advanced” designation indicate their equivalency to Advanced Placement (AP).   In 2015-2016, ASD is offering 8 Advanced classes.  All students in Advanced courses are encouraged to take the AP exams.  Research methods are an important part of academic development in the STEM subject areas.  ASD offers a course to Juniors called Learning Studios which teaches students the project management skills needed to design and implement independent science research projects.  The development of these skills prepares ASD students for the successful completion of a Senior Research Project, a graduation requirement that represents the quality and depth of ASD's program and its students.  

Area of Specialty

During their second year of high school, students begin career planning in their advisory group emphasizing on Engineering, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Environment & Global Sustainability, Math & Physics, Aeronautics & Aviation, and Computer Science.

Smarter Balanced Results

The Smarter Balanced Assessment is a computer based, adaptive test being delivered to schools in the State of New Hampshire as the standardized reading, writing, and math assessment. ASD students enrolled in grades 6,7, and 8 participate in Smarter Balanced Testing each spring. The students are tested in Language Arts and Mathematics in two sections: the Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) and the Performance Task. The graphs below represent ASD's baseline after the first year of Smarter Balanced Assessment.

SAT Reasoning Test Results

The SAT Reasoning Test is administered 7 times per year by the College Board as a college readiness exam.  The graph below represents the ASD's class of 2015 average scores in reading, writing and math.
